At first, authorities thought that a faulty EV battery caused the fire accident. However, the footage captured by the Sentry Mode confirmed that it wasn't.

As of writing, fire incidents involving Tesla EVs are highly criticized, although there's no proof that electric cars are involved in higher numbers of fire accidents than gasoline vehicles.

Because of this, the Spokane Police Department first concluded that the Model S battery caused the fire incident. However, the Sentry Mode showed that they were wrong.

A Tesla car arrived at a service center after the company indicated it would be closing showrooms and in the future selling its cars online, in Los Angeles, California, on March 4, 2019. - Tesla is planning to unveil a new electric "crossover" vehicle on March 14, which is slightly bigger and more expensive than its most affordable model, according to chief executive Elon Musk.

Police authorities claimed that EVs tend to catch fire. But Harriston disagreed with their belief. Luckily, he was able to retrieve the video captured by his EV's Sentry Mode before it went ablaze.

In the footage, it was revealed that a man actually poured gasoline into Harriston's Tesla Model S. After that, the criminal set the car in flames.

"I can't fathom myself wanting to set fire to anything for political reasons or whatever. I just. I don't get it," said the EV owner.

Thanks to the video, Harriston was able to convince SPD that the fire incident was actually arson.

Importance of Sentry Mode

Numerous reports stated that Tesla EVs are commonly targeted by road rage and other harmful activities because of Elon Musk.

However, it is unclear if Harriston's Model S was burned because of this specific reason. As of writing, the Spokane Police Department is still investigating the incident.

This is why it is important to activate the Sentry Mode. To do this, you can follow the steps below:

  1. With your vehicle in Park, enable Dashcam by navigating to Controls > Safety > Dashcam.
  2. Touch Controls > Safety > Sentry Mode > On. Once enabled, the Sentry Mode icon in the Controls tab turns red.
