Plex, a media company, has just announced a new feature for Plexamp, their standalone music player. This update has surfaced because of the collaboration with OpenAI's ChatGPT, called "Sonic Sage."

Bringing AI Capabilities to Plexamp with Natural Language Support

According to the story by Tech Crunch, this feature allows users to create personalized music playlists by accessing their TIDAL subscription and using natural language to describe the type of music they want.

Integrating AI capabilities into music streaming services is becoming increasingly common. Spotify offers users an "AI DJ" and third-party apps, such as Petey, applying the same concept to Apple Music.

However, this feature is confined only to Plexamp, the debut project of Plex's Labs division launched in 2017. It was built, in part, to bring back the classic Winamp media player, and, more recently, it has become a subscription-based service.

With the upgrade, users can now 'travel back in time' and rediscover oldies, explore 'sonic adventures,' listen to 'mood radios,' and more. It is available on Mac, Windows, Linux, Headless, and mobile operating systems.

Adding an OpenAI API Key to Enable the Sonic Sage Feature

To take advantage of the feature, users must be Plex Pass subscribers, and they must also need to be subscribed to TIDAL. They will also have to create an OpenAI account and add an OpenAI API key to the Plexamp settings to make the feature work.

The API key can also limit the selection of songs to only those in the user's library. The introduction of the Sonic Sage feature marks an exciting development for Plexamp users, as explained further in an article by Android Authority

By accessing their TIDAL account and natural language, music fans can curate playlists to their preferences with just a few clicks. With the variety of AI-powered features, users can now experience the music they choose in a more accessible, enjoyable way.

Plex has been updating its Plexamp music player with different features since the project was launched a few years ago. With its latest update, the company is tapping into ChatGPT, an AI interface technology developed by OpenAI, to bring users a unique way to build playlists.

Experiencing Music with Plexamp's Sonic Sage and Other Sophisticated Features

The new feature, "Sonic Sage," allows users to create unique playlists by simply describing what they want to hear to a natural language engine. To access the new feature, users must have a Plex Pass subscription, a TIDAL subscription, and an OpenAI account, where they must enter an OpenAI API key in the Plexamp settings.

After that, users can use language and keywords to ask for music from their library, such as "mellow ballads by heavy metal bands," "upbeat electronics by The Chainsmokers," or "Psychedelic indie rock."

Meanwhile, Plexamp also supports several other sophisticated ways to discover music. It offers a variety of "DJ modes," a machine-learning "sonic adventure" feature, "mood radios," and a feature that takes users back in time to discover old music.
