Elon Musk-led automaker Tesla has achieved its goal of producing 5,000 Model Y vehicles in a week at its Gigactory in Texas. This number was the original goal of the company for its volume production at the plant.

GRUENHEIDE, GERMANY - MARCH 21: Newly completed Tesla Model Y electric cars stand at the new Tesla Gigafactory electric car manufacturing plant on March 21, 2022 near Gruenheide, Germany. The new plant, officially called the Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg, will officially open tomorrow with an event with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Tesla CEO Elon Musk. The new plant is producing the Model Y as well as electric car batteries.

Achieving Production Volume Goal

Tesla announced on Tuesday that its Gigafactory in Texas achieved a production volume of 5,000 Model Y vehicles per week, which means that it would be able to produce 260,000 vehicles per year. According to Electrek's report, the automaker created a friendly competition between Gigafactory Texas and Gigafactory Berlin, which both ramped up its volume production.

Compared to its production rate of 3,000 per week in December and 4,000 by April, achieving this new goal is a milestone for Tesla as it increases its capacity by 20% in only a short amount of time. By achieving this goal, Tesla Model Y has overtaken the Model 3 in becoming the company's most popular vehicle model.

Before the announcement from Tesla itself, Teslarati obtained several pictures of the company celebrating the production milestone with a unique logo that features "5K" and Texas longhorns and engrained Tesla T logo. This was planted as a celebration of the milestone of Giga Texas, fitting due to its being the only model that they currently produce in the facility.

This goal was achieved by Giga Texas a bit behind compared to other facilities of the company as they are facing different challenges in the facility. This includes vehicles that are equipped with 4680 battery cells, which enables new structural battery pack chassis design.

In comparison with the traditional ones, this new way of manufacturing vehicles brings some complexity. It remains unclear how many vehicles are being produced by Tesla with 4690 cells and 2170 cells, including the structural battery pack.

Giga Texas is now anticipating beginning production of the highly-anticipated Tesla Cybertrucks, which amassed over 1 million pre-orders and is set to begin production sometime later this year.

While Musk stated that production would begin later this summer at the earliest, there is still a question mark if they will proceed with this as Cybertruck's production has been halted several times already.

Other Facilities

This achievement was followed by the Giga Berlin Plant reaching a rate of 5,000 Model Y per week last March. If Giga Berlin keeps up with the current manufacturing pace, the facility will be able to manufacture over 250,000 vehicles per year.

Now that it has reached its goal with this vehicle, Tesla anticipates adding a new model to the lineup, which is noteworthy since the company is now authorized to build 500,000 vehicles per year out of the factory. It was rumored that Tesla has been planning to release the Model 3 next in this facility, but the company has been silent for quite some time now regarding this matter.
