Unfortunately, while he was trying to take photos of the reservoir and himself, his handset accidentally slid from his hand. Because of this, he asked for help from divers. But they failed to retrieve the smartphone.

Left with no choice, Rajesh decided to order his subordinates to drain the entire Kherkatta Dam.

They even used a diesel pump to completely drain the reservoir. The activity lasted for three days; with millions of liters of water from the dam being removed.

This action of his was criticized by a water resource department official, who filed a complaint. After that, Rajesh was suspended.

"He has been suspended until an inquiry. Water is an essential resource, and it cannot be wasted like this," said Kanker district official Priyanka Shukla.

What happened to the smartphone?

Rajesh's smartphone was retrieved. However, the device was no longer in usable condition when it was pulled out of the dam.

BBC News reported that the handset is a Samsung smartphone (the exact model was not disclosed), which costs around $1,200.

Rajesh was not really concerned about his smartphone. What he is worried about is the sensitive government information it contains.

The Indian official further defended himself, saying that the water drained benefited the farmers because it flowed through a nearby canal.
