Apple macOS 14 Sonoma: Compatibility to Old Macs

During the 2023 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) Monday, Apple announced the upcoming release of macOS 14 Sonoma, the latest addition to its desktop operating system. However, Apple has decided to limit its compatibility to some Mac devices this time.

Mac devices manufactured in 2016 and older are no longer eligible for the update. The announcement also outlines the list of Mac models that will support macOS 14, starting with the iMac Pro in 2017 and various MacBook, Mac Pro, Mac Studio, iMac, and Mac Mini models released in subsequent years.

Apple's decision to limit macOS 14 compatibility aims to ensure optimized performance using the latest hardware. The company is aligning its operating system with the capabilities of the newer Mac models, providing users with a more streamlined and efficient experience.

macOS 17 Sonoma's Skipping A Lot of Macs

CNET reported that these devices would be the only models that can upgrade to the latest macOS version once it drops this fall:

  • iMac Pro 2017
  • MacBook Air 2018 and later
  • MacBook Pro 2018 and later
  • iMac: 2019 and later
  • Mac Pro 2019 and later
  • Mac Studio 2022 and later
  • Mac Mini 2018 and later

While older Mac models manufactured before 2017 will not receive macOS 14 compatibility, they will continue to receive security updates and still be able to use the current version of macOS for a while longer. Apple's decision remains unknown, but it only highlights that those with applicable hardware may experience the new features of the latest macOS version.

The specific release date for macOS 14 Sonoma has yet to be announced, but Apple has confirmed that a public beta will be available next month, with a full release this fall. The beta release will allow eligible participants to try the new operating system and provide valuable feedback before its official release.

Apple's macOS Development

Coupled with the new macOS announcement at WWDC was the arrival of the new Macs. One is the 15-inch MacBook Air with the M2 chip, the first expanded screen size of the lightest laptop lineup of the company. There are also the new Mac CPUs, with the upgraded Mac Pro device and the improved Mac Studio.

Apple aims to deliver a more cohesive and refined user experience. Users of eligible devices can look forward to the optimized performance, enhanced security features, and new functionalities that macOS 14 Sonoma will bring.

It is expected that Apple will leverage the powerful capabilities of its proprietary M-series chips and deliver seamless integration with other Apple devices and services.
