AMD and Micro Center have struck a deal to launch the limited edition AMD Ryzen 5 5600X3D CPU on July 7 for $229. It brings AMD's game-boosting 3D V-Cache chip stacking tech and is reportedly an ideal upgrade for older AMD PCs using socket AM4, which is an aging socket.

AMD Ryzen 5 5600X3D With Six Cores and 12 Threads Is Available at Micro Center Stores Only

According to ARS Technica, the new CPU will be released exclusively in Micro Center stores. However, the outlet noted that this tech retailer does not ship most of what it sells to buyers online.

Tom's Hardware reported that AMD and Micro Center had not confirmed how many processors will be available, but Micro Center expects to have stock for a few months. Micro Center will reportedly have the sole distribution of the mid-range processor until supplies run out.

The Ryzen 5 5600X3D has an impressive base clock speed of 3.3 GHz and a boosted speed of up to 4.4 GHz. It also features six cores and 12 threads, 96MB of total L3 cache that works with AM4 platforms, and supports DDR4 memory with a default TDP of 105W.

Similarities of AMD Ryzen 5600X3D and AMD Ryzen 5800X3D

The AMD Ryzen 5600X3D is reportedly similar to the AMD Ryzen 5800X3D, combining a regular Zen 3 processor die with an additional 64MB chunk of L3 cache piled on top.

That would make them similar to other Zen 3 counterparts like the Ryzen 5 5600 and the Ryzen 5 5600X. The chip reportedly uses more power while its clock runs at lower speeds, resulting in underperforming non-X3D chips that do not benefit from the extra cache. ARS Technica also reported that regarding "overclocking" and "undervolting," these chips have limited support.

However, the outlet noted that games usually need the extra cache, which will benefit people who combine high-end GPUs with affordable CPUs. The outlet also reported that the price of the original eight-core Ryzen 5800X3D has dropped from $449 to just around $200.

AMD Ryzen 5600X3D Works Better for Players Using Older-Socket AM4 Systems

The AMD Ryzen 5600X3D is good for people with older-socket AM4 gaming PCs that want to upgrade at a lower price. If you can get it, it is a great gaming chip for a cheaper price.

The Ryzen 5600X3D could also be an alternative to Intel's Core i5 processors for people who want a price-conscious high-end gaming PC. AM4 motherboards with DDR4 RAM are reportedly cheaper and sufficient, rather than upgrading to a pricier DDR5.

Buyers are Encouraged to Update BIOSes Before Installing New Chips

Owners of old-socket AM4 systems were urged to update their BIOSes before installing the new chip. AMD noted that BIOSes that support 5000-series chips should suppose to boot with a 5600X3D installed.

The company has always advised buyers to update the latest BIOS to be able to use and experience the 3D V-Cache technology.
