According to research from the University of Montana, AI's creative thinking is incredible, outperforming the top 1% of humans on a recognized creativity test, as shown by ChatGPT.

The Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking (TTCT) were used by a study team led by Dr. Erik Guzik, an assistant clinical professor at the University of Michigan's College of Business, to examine the inventive potential of AI.

Human vs. Artificial Thinking

ChatGPT, an AI-driven tool, compared the replies of 24 University of Michigan students taking entrepreneurship and personal finance classes to those of a control group. 2,700 college students who had the TTCT examination in 2016 were used to compare the outcomes.

The role of AI in the process was unknown to Scholastic Testing Service, the unbiased adjudicator.

ChatGPT excelled at coming up with lots of ideas and ranked in the top percentile for originality. Despite a little decline in its ability to generate a variety of ideas (97th percentile), it still performed admirably, ranking among the most gifted creative thinkers.

Commencing the Study

At the Southern Oregon University Creativity Conference, the study—led by Guzik with assistance from Gilde and Byrge—displayed AI's advancing creative capabilities. The researchers stressed the value of emphasizing evidence over in-depth interpretation.

Guzik spoke with ChatGPT about TTCT's achievements, and the AI provided a perceptive response, admitting that people might not completely comprehend creativity.

Guzik accepted this and suggested the creation of sophisticated evaluation tools to distinguish between ideas produced by humans and those produced by AI.

Guzik's Creative Obsession

This study was influenced by Guzik's creative enthusiasm, which she discovered while participating in a talented student program.

His interest in brainstorming and the power of the human imagination expanded when psychologist Ellis Paul Torrance introduced him to the Future Problem Solving method. Interactions with ChatGPT, an AI that displayed creative replies, served as inspiration for the study.

To evaluate ChatGPT's capacity for creativity, researchers put it through a rigorous testing process.

AI's Creative Potential

According to research, ChatGPT couldn't come up with novel solutions to problems, but GPT-4 improvements elevated it to the top 1% of human replies.

Guzik expects that as AI technologies advance, they will be used as essential tools in business, fostering local and national creativity. He stressed how AI has the power to alter business by merging creative thinking with entrepreneurship and innovation.
