Once admired for its insightful hardware reviews and informative content, LTT found itself at the epicenter of controversy, leading to an apology video and raising questions about content accuracy, ethics, and workplace culture.
June 24: Monoblock Review Flawed
The controversy ignited with a review of the Monoblock, a prototype water-cooling block, conducted by LTT founder Linus Sebastian and writer Adam Sonedergard.
The review drew criticism for testing the Monoblock on a GeForce RTX 4090, despite being designed for a 3090 Ti.
Linus' graph in an RTX 4090 review displayed stunningly false performance figures, which were later corrected after community input and comments from rival tech platform Gamers Nexus.
When combined with poor fact-checking, these inaccuracies have the potential to mislead viewers and customers.
The situation worsened when Sebastian declined to re-test the cooler on the proper GPU, citing impracticality. Adding fuel to the fire, LTT auctioned the unique cooler for charity instead of returning it to the manufacturer, Billet Labs. Here is a video of the said cooler displayed at LTT Expo 2023.
August 14: Gamers Nexus Raises Concerns
Competing hardware channel Gamers Nexus released a video criticizing the Monoblock review and raising broader questions about LTT's accuracy, ethics, and responsibility.

This triggered a public response from Sebastian, acknowledging "sloppiness" but defending LTT's transparency. In this response, Linus was mad that GN did not reach out for comments first.
The community response was overwhelming, with thousands of replies questioning his reaction.

August 15: The Apology Video
In an attempt to address mounting concerns, LTT released an apology video featuring appearances from company executives, including CEO Terren Tong, CFO Yvonne Ho, and department heads.
The video acknowledged shortcomings in content quality and accuracy and criticized Sebastian's handling of the Monoblock review. LTT executives vowed to slow down video production and prioritize accuracy.
LMG expected to release at least 25 videos weekly before the debacle, with over 15 million subscribers on the main channel and a huge network of sub-channels.
As revealed by LTT staff in this separate video, this frenzied pace frequently results in videos being hurried out without thorough quality control.
Going back to the apology video, Yvonne Ho stated, "Linus made a clear and egregious judgment error... He allowed his personal feelings on the matter to cloud his judgment." Sebastian expressed regret and committed to involving the leadership team in future crisis communications.
Allegations of Toxic Work Environment
The controversy took a darker turn when former LTT social media manager Madison Reeve recounted her experiences, citing a toxic work environment and pressure to produce content that adversely affected her mental health.

A Twitter thread detailed instances of harassment, casting a shadow over the apology video's tone and sincerity.
CEO Terren Tong responded by expressing shock at the allegations and committing to a thorough assessment. "We've proactively reached out internally today to encourage members of our team to report any workplace bullying or harassment... Our HR team will be conducting a more thorough assessment of the allegations."
Community Backlash and Subscriber Impact
While LTT's apology video attempted to address concerns, it faced mixed reactions from the channel's own Reddit community. Criticisms emerged regarding the video's tone, promotion of the LTT store and sponsors, and monetization.
As PCGamer reports, the feud's effects became evident as subscriber counts dipped within the first 24 hours of the video's release.
The controversy underscored broader issues in tech content creation. The rapid growth of Linus Media Group led to concerns about rushed content releases and insufficient quality control.
