In an effort to ensure that ERS-1000 Aibo robot dogs bring joy for a lifetime, Sony is launching a new sustainability program.

Five years have passed since the release of the ERS-1000 Aibo, a modern revival of Sony's iconic line of "autonomous entertainment" robot dogs from the late 90s.

Now, Sony Japan introduces the "Aibo Foster Parent Program," aimed at assisting ERS-1000 owners who have opted to cancel their Aibo Cloud Plan by providing them with an opportunity to contribute their beloved gadgets to a noble cause.

(Photo: Aibo) With the "foster care" program spearheaded by Sony, aging robot dogs can be repaired and rehomed to provide emotional support to different facilities.

Sony's initiative involves a comprehensive process for ERS-1000 units donated to the program, the Japanese press announced. These units will undergo rigorous testing and meticulous repair to ensure they are in optimal working condition.

Once restored, Sony will allocate these robots to medical facilities, nursing homes, and various organizations that can benefit from the companionship and support these remarkable robots offer.

Financial Support for Sustainability

To fund this sustainable endeavor, Sony plans to charge a reasonable fee to the Aibo "foster parents" participating in the program. The details of this fee remain undisclosed, but it is clear that it will be instrumental in covering the costs of testing, repairing, and maintaining the donated Aibo units, per The Verge.

Furthermore, any excess funds generated may be channeled toward the upkeep and refurbishment of other Aibo units, based on their individual condition and requirements.

Aibo is More than Just a Robot Dog

While $2,900 Aibo was originally introduced as an "autonomous entertainment" robot dog, its versatile capabilities have allowed it to transcend its initial purpose.

The ERS-1000 Aibo is equipped with advanced features such as voice and touch responsiveness, featuring a range of sensors for lifelike petting experiences.

Remarkably, it even incorporates a nose camera, enabling it to recognize and interact with family members, making it an ideal companion for those who may not have access to a real dog.

Sustainable Solution to E-Waste

Japan has long been at the forefront of emotional support robots, with examples like SoftBank's Pepper and the Paro therapy seal.

By introducing the "Aibo Foster Parent Program," Sony not only extends the lifespan of these pre-loved Aibo units but also plays a crucial role in reducing potential e-waste. It's a sustainable solution that aligns with the growing appreciation for emotional support robots, providing joy, comfort, and companionship to individuals who need it the most.

In other news, HT Tech reported that the AI-powered Aibot robot dog will be coming to the US during the holiday season.
