The new foldable smartphone from OnePlus, the Open, is only word of mouth until now, as the company gave a first look at its new tech featuring its "gapless" hinge that revolutionizes the niche. It appeared in the recent review video from Unbox Therapy, also having CEO Pete Lau discuss its features and the background of the device via a video conference with translation.

In hindsight, this would be the first foldable coming from OnePlus but would be the flagship of the company that owns it, BBK Electronics, along with Oppo's Find N and Find N2.

Unbox Therapy has shared a new video that shows a first look at the upcoming OnePlus Open, the new foldable smartphone from the Chinese tech company. Among the most iconic developments in this device is the "gapless" hinge design that fully closes it when folded, meaning that there are no visible gaps unlike earlier designs and hinges present in other smartphones.

In the channel's test, they stuck a piece of paper in between the fold of the smartphone and showed how they can lift it by only holding the paper and the device does not fall off.

The video shows the likeness of the device, but not all of the details as there were carefully placed coverings for its cameras and more, most likely requested by OnePlus to avoid spoiling its features and details.

OnePlus CEO Pete Lau Fills in Details

Alongside the different features of the OnePlus Open, its CEO Pete Lau also joins the video via a conference call, with his statements translated into English for the viewers to understand. Lau regarded that OnePlus has over 600 patents on the hinge's elements alone, and this is what challenged the company the most during its development.

In this design, the inner screen bezels are raised higher compared to other foldables which helped achieve this feature, also having 31 fewer components compared to its co-subsidiary, the Oppo Find N2.

Foldable Smartphones' Tech

The world of the foldable smartphone world is dominated by Asian technology, with China and Korea leading the charge, centering on the top brands that deliver different kinds of experiences for all. One of the most notable now is the latest Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 and the Z Flip5, two devices that were recently unveiled last late July from its Unpacked event.

However, there are massive competitors in the foldable market from the renowned Chinese brands in the world, with Oppo among those leading the charge with its Find N3 which is allegedly coming in late 2023

This new smartphone from OnePlus was confirmed for the second half of 2023, but no specific details were revealed by its COO and president, Kinder Liu back in February.

OnePlus remains a renowned brand in the consumer technology world and has given the public smartphones that can pack a punch against the likes of Apple, Samsung, Google, and more. With the new gapless hinge and overall iconic performance, the OnePlus Open is already one notable smartphone, but its performance is yet to be judged when it arrives.
