As we close out another year of discovering new music and rewinding classic hits, we’re back to celebrate the sounds that soundtracked your entire year.

What's New with YouTube Music Recap?

This year, YouTube Music rolled out three new features: custom album art, music moods, and the ability to personalize and shuffle Google Photos with favorite songs.

Notably, TechCrunch reported that users can now view their stats directly in the YouTube Music app, distinguishing it from Apple Music's year-end review, which is exclusively available on the web.

To access YouTube Music's Recap, navigate to your profile avatar in the top-right corner and select "Your Recap." The Recap provides insights into your top five artists, songs, moods, genres, albums, and playlists.

This highlights your longest listening streak and the total number of minutes you spent listening in 2023. It also brings forth mood matching, a novel feature aligning your top songs with descriptors such as laid-back, cheerful, and excited.

Introducing a fresh element to the Recap journey is the personalized album art feature. YouTube Music ingeniously assembles a palette of colors and visuals derived from your most-played songs, crafting a unique album cover that encapsulates your vibe and aesthetic throughout the year.

In the previous year, YouTube Music introduced shareable cards, allowing users to add a personal touch with images from Google Photos.

Expanding on this feature, the platform now enables users to shuffle and tailor their photos, seamlessly blending favorite songs from different seasons with cherished memories. The result is a visually captivating representation that neatly encapsulates the entire year.

Competing with Spotify, Apple

Merely enjoying music and podcasts no longer suffices as The Verge reported that there's a growing desire to monitor and contrast our listening patterns annually or even seasonally.

The emergence of Spotify Wrapped has introduced a fresh tradition, gaining widespread attention across social media and real-life interactions as users eagerly share their listening history with friends or the public.

This phenomenon underscores the platform's immense popularity, boasting over 574 million users globally in the year 2023 alone. Consequently, it has become a benchmark inspiring other audio apps to emulate, evident in endeavors such as Apple Music Replay, YouTube Music Recap, and beyond.

Every bit of this data is channeled back to the musicians and creators, providing them with additional insights into their performance on individual users' charts, revealing if they held the position of someone's favorite in 2023.

While it may be a challenge to rival the appeal of Spotify Wrapped, boasting nine years of content and a plethora of entertaining memes, YouTube Music is certainly on the right track. In contrast, Apple Music falls short in delivering an engaging experience, offering bland metrics and subdued color schemes.
