Ella Thompson's simple Facebook call to action sparked a nationwide movement, breaking down social barriers and uniting thousands of like-minded girls, BBC tells us in a report.

What started as a way to combat loneliness quickly grew into a thriving community known as Girls Who Walk, now with over 9,000 members across the UK.

Making Long-Lasting Connections

Ella, a 23-year-old from Greater Manchester, returned home from university in August and discovered a lack of accessible groups addressing young people's isolation.

"I found myself looking for ways to meet new people but found most events to be paid for or centered around drinking, which I did not want to get involved in," Thompson told ilovemanchester.com.

With this, she wanted to start "a free, accessible way for girls to make some long-lasting connections," she said. She had no idea the outpouring of support that would follow her initial post.

From humble beginnings of 50-100 attendees, the weekly walks blossomed into a robust network fostering friendships and empowerment. Charley Cooper, now the events organizer, expressed how joining the group led her to a new circle of friends.

"It's a space where events are already happening, making it less daunting to join alone," Charley remarked.

A Growing Community

Testimonials poured in, illustrating the community's profound impact on individuals like Faye Gibson. Formerly hesitant to approach new people, Faye now volunteers for the group and describes the experience as "rewarding," having found a newfound confidence.

Despite its rapid growth, Ella remains steadfast in her commitment to affordability. "I had no money, no friends, and I wanted an event that empowered me," she recalled, emphasizing the inclusive nature of Girls Who Walk.

Beyond the walks, the community has become a hub of support and empowerment. Roselle Castillo, managing the group's social media, highlighted its evolution into a space where girls uplift each other.

The spirit of camaraderie was palpable during their recent Christmas social at Loaf in Salford. The event, accompanied by Manchester's typical rain, did not dampen the enthusiasm of the 100 girls.

Looking ahead, the group envisions expanding their repertoire with more events and activities, fueling their excitement for the future. Charley expressed, "This is just the start for Girls Who Walk."

Ella's initiative has not only forged connections but inspired others. Branches are sprouting nationwide, from Dundee to Cornwall, and Ella actively supports potential leaders through chat groups and shared advice.

According to Ella, "it's overwhelming" to see how her idea "grew into an amazing community for people to make friends."

The Benefits of Walking

Amid the personal stories and community growth, the scientific community reminds us of the inherent health benefits of walking. Harvard studies emphasize walking's role in combating obesity genes, curbing cravings, lowering cancer risk, relieving joint pain, and boosting immune function.
