With a design portfolio that includes some of the most advanced esports facilities in the world, including Esports Stadium Arlington, Fortress Melbourne and the NBA 2K League Broadcast Arena, Populous is at the forefront of cutting-edge venue design for the ever-expanding live gaming experience.

Redefining Landscape of Live Gaming Events

Building on the success of the iconic Sphere in Las Vegas, Interesting Engineering reported that the architectural genius Populous is now venturing into the esports realm with the visionary Qiddiya City Esports Arena in Saudi Arabia. 

As part of the ambitious Quiddiya Giga project, this futuristic gaming haven is set to redefine the landscape of live gaming events. With an expansive total area of video screens, the arena aims to solidify Saudi Arabia's standing as a prominent global gaming hub.

With a design seamlessly blending technological wonders and an engaging fan experience, the esports Arena is poised to establish groundbreaking standards. 

A highlight includes 4D haptic sets that go beyond visual engagement, allowing visitors to sense, feel, and even smell the unfolding action on an immense central LED screen spanning 3,600 sq m (~39,000 sq ft).

This versatile venue is designed to accommodate 5,155 attendees, employing detailed sightline studies for optimal seating in the main auditorium and cutting-edge design tools to finesse screen placement.

Complemented by state-of-the-art AV systems, these elements collectively guarantee a fully immersive and unparalleled experience for all visitors.

Attracting 10 Million Visitors by 2030

Saudi Arabia's commitment to esports goes beyond a fleeting trend, forming a crucial part of the comprehensive National Gaming and Esports Strategy outlined in Saudi Vision 2030

This visionary initiative aims to position the kingdom as a global gaming and esports hub, with a goal of attracting 10 million visitors by the year 2030.

Findings from a joint study by Populous and YouGov in 2022 emphasize the significant interest in esports among Saudis, with a remarkable 29% of the population expressing keen enthusiasm for live gaming experiences. 

At the forefront of the National Gaming and Esports Strategy, the Qiddiya City Esports Arena is set to become the world's pioneering mixed-use gaming and esports district.

Recognized for its groundbreaking designs in esports, the official press release stated that Populous holds an esteemed portfolio featuring Esports Stadium Arlington, Fortress Melbourne, and the NBA 2K League Broadcast Arena.

Rhys Courtney, Senior Principal at Populous EMEA, expressed pride in merging their extensive expertise in esports facilities and technology with Qiddiya's vision to craft a world-leading arena for both competitors and fans.

Reflecting Qiddiya's 'Play Life' ethos, the arena is a testament to innovative design, featuring themed concourses, a central arcade, a food 'souk,' and retail spaces, immersing fans in a fantasy world beyond the gaming realm.

Dedicating 20% of the arena to premium hospitality, the design embraces gaming culture themes over conventional hospitality. 

Populous places a strong emphasis on meticulously designing back-of-house and event production spaces, aiming to make the venue a cherished space for fans, brands, athletes, and promoters.
