SEATTLE – Starbucks Coffee Company (NASDAQ: SBUX) announced, starting today, customers at all company-operated and participating licensed Starbucks Stores across the U.S. and Canada can use their clean personal cup when ordering in café, in the drive-thru or when ordering ahead with the Starbucks app.

Revolutionizing Sustainability

Applicable to walk-in and drive-thru orders, this initiative positions Starbucks as the first national coffee retailer in the US and Canada to extend this environmentally conscious option to its patrons.

While the option for customers to fill reusable cups inside select Starbucks locations has been available, the recent expansion ensures that the drive-thru window is now open to clean, refillable cups at all company-operated and participating licensed stores.

The Verge reported that this move aligns with Starbucks' commitment to sustainability and encourages customers to contribute to environmental conservation.

Participating in this eco-friendly practice benefits the planet and offers customers a $0.10 discount on their beverage, reinforcing the company's efforts to incentivize and reward sustainable choices in coffee consumption.

Acknowledging Impact of Disposable Cups

Starbucks declared its commitment to a broader cultural movement, leading the charge towards reusable alternatives and steering away from single-use plastics.

The coffee giant, producing approximately 6 billion cups annually, acknowledges the environmental impact of disposable cups, accounting for 1 percent of the 600 billion paper and plastic cups generated globally, a significant portion ending up as waste.

Starbucks faces persistent calls from environmental advocates, including Greenpeace, to completely phase out disposable cups. Notably, certain locations in South Korea have pledged to achieve this goal by 2025.

The company has set ambitious targets, vowing to ensure easy access to personal or Starbucks-provided reusable to-go cups across its US and Canadian outlets by 2025.

Kate Daly, Managing Director and Head of the Center for the Circular Economy at Closed Loop Partners, emphasizes in its press release the importance of using one's existing cup as the most sustainable option.

Bringing personal cups to stores represents a crucial step in mitigating the issue of single-use packaging waste. As a leading national retailer, Starbucks has played a pioneering role by introducing personal cup ordering across all channels, including mobile orders.

The NextGen Consortium takes pride in Starbucks' involvement as a founding member, aiming to support the company's efforts in advancing a waste-free world.

The focus on encouraging customers to use reusable cups at Starbucks drive-thrus has sparked discussions on platforms like Reddit. Some users have raised concerns about potential increased tailpipe emissions, as baristas need to wait for customers to reach the pick-up window before preparing drinks in their personal cups.

Issues like operational delays have been pointed out, leading to debates on the environmental impact of the initiative. However, it's important to note that Starbucks is currently facing more significant controversies, including labor conditions, alleged union-busting, and responses related to the Israel-Hamas war.
