Many people believe that the VR tech can alter our usual perception of reality, but British model Sabrina Dhowre Elba believes that it can help rebuilt empathy among struggling individuals living in poverty.

As "On The Brink" makes its debut, shocking statistics from Hungry For Action reveal that an estimated 18.3 million people have succumbed to hunger globally since the devastating Ethiopia famine in 1984. The film reveals the backdrop of a relentless global hunger crisis that continues to claim lives.

According to The Independent, Dhowre Elba expresses concern about the desensitization to such critical issues due to the overwhelming volume of world events. She points out the need to recognize the severity of the situation, especially with governments slashing budgets and curtailing essential funding for crisis mitigation.

"While not directly connected with the production of the film, the attention for the issue is something that I have been working for and resonates quite closely with the work that I do, it's an important issue to me," Dhowre Elba told the PA news agency.

Reimagining Empathy Through VR Technology

"On The Brink" ventures into drought-affected communities in Somaliland, capturing poignant narratives through the lens of photographer Misan Harriman.

Using advanced 360 technology, the film tackles the lives of individuals like Ayan and Faisa, whose stories epitomize the harsh realities of malnutrition and hunger-related illnesses.

A Transformative VR Experience

Dhowre Elba shares the impact of VR technology in fostering empathy by allowing individuals to step into the shoes of those facing adversity. She highlights how this immersive experience bridges the emotional gap that conventional media struggles to address.

The film's production, utilizing thousands of stitched-together pictures, creates interactive scenes, offering a fully immersive encounter.

The Power of Shared Stories

Dhowre Elba, also a UN Goodwill Ambassador, believes in the transformative potential of storytelling. She contends that the most significant distance between two people is their individual stories.

By sharing these stories through innovative mediums like VR, the initiative aims to reignite empathy and prompt collective action against global hunger.

The VR film "On The Brink" seeks to spell out the narrative surrounding global hunger, urging individuals to connect emotionally with the subjects. Through the immersive power of VR, Sabrina Dhowre Elba envisions a world where understanding each other's stories becomes the cornerstone for rebuilding empathy.

Sabrina Elba is more than just an activist wife and a model.
