This year, at the Mobile World Congress 2024, the Open Gateway Initiative gets an update since its introduction at last year's event, centering on the global partnerships towards improving 5G for all. The keynote preview centering on this topic featured the likes of KPMG's Huntley Bakich and GSMA Intelligence's Radhika Gupta, where they discussed how the initiative grew and how it will move forward.
This new approach towards expanding more of 5G relies more on offering developers a chance to grow digital services without relying much on telcos.
MWC 2024: Open Gateway Initiative Gets an Update from KPMG, GSMA
GSMA Intelligence was the purveyor of last year's ambitious Open Gateway initiative. After its introduction in 2023, there has been massive progress in this move towards growing more of 5G for developers and technology.
Gupta, Head of Data Acquisition over at GSMA, claimed that around 45 operators have signed up for the data points under the initiative since 2023. This number represents around 65 percent of the mobile market by connections, said Gupta, while also noting the multiple partnerships and collaborations to launch Open APIs for developers and more.
On the other hand, Bakich noted that the focus of KPMG on their side of the initiative is growing more access and, more importantly, access to data, which will help boost more collaborations across the industry. KPMG positioned itself to "connecting the enterprise," helping virtualize the models for telecommunications companies joining this move.

The Future of 5G Access and Growth with Open Gateway
The goal of GSMA's Open Gateway initiative is to push more telcos forward, centering on a new approach to growing more 5G access and growth in tech, where different aspects of the industry have access and control. Through these Open APIs, the initiative leverages a consortium among companies to access a single and programmable access point (API), which many have already submitted their take.

GSMA's initiative will focus more on the APIs for many to access, on a less-telco approach towards expanding the capabilities of 5G, which is expected to grow to around 1.2 billion by 2025.
Bakich noted that this is a more "tech-led" approach towards improving the wireless network connection globally.
5G Mobile Data: Its Milestones and Development
The world of 5G is still growing, and this is because more smartphones and devices are including the present industry standard in their devices, centering on more affordable options. Since 5G's availability to the mobile market, it has offered a chance to tap into the massive network spectrum, leveraging its faster upload, download, and latency speeds.
There are also companies pushing the boundaries of 5G, one that centers on the next spectrum known as 6G. Qualcomm is among those looking towards this upgrade, previously achieving a new global record of 7.5 Gbps downlink speed from its Snapdragon X75, which is capable of sub-6GHz access.
Despite the growing focus on the new tech, 5G is still an important factor in today's connections and communications, with the Open Gateway initiative offering wider access to the spectrum, connecting the world through its APIs.
