The latest version of YouTube for Quest offers 8K quality streaming to the Meta wearables, significantly improving the users' watching experience on the headset. However,  according to the latest report, this sharper, better-quality image has a catch. Videos shown via 8K quality offer a 4320p resolution, two times as much as 4K's 2160p.

Videos watched via VR headsets or mixed-reality ones bring noticeable differences among different media qualities as they right on one's face.

The latest version 1.54 of YouTube for Quest offers 8K quality video streaming on the famed Meta wearable headsets that support the latest update, according to Android Central. This is a significant step as the headset offers a closer streaming experience that could help see more of the quality, details, elements, and other factors that make up the video.

To date, 8K is the top video quality in the world and it is not yet widely offered among streaming platforms, with 4K remaining as the streaming standard.

Additionally, this requires the said creator to offer their videos in 8K for this to work.

YouTube 8K for Quest: What's the Catch?

According to the report, YouTube for Quest's 8K streaming quality has a catch, and it would only show 4320p resolution videos in the SDR (standard definition range) format, best known for peaking at 100 to 300 nits of brightness.

HDR, on the other hand, may bring as much as 10,000 nits of brightness even at 1080p or 4K quality.

However, despite the lack of brightness, the 8K video quality more than makes up for the upgraded streaming experience, as users would see the difference, as claimed by the report. It was regarded that 4K and 8K have "noticeable" quality differences.

The 8K quality can be found on the resolution options under 4320p.

Meta Quest and YouTube

Quest is known for its massive improvements over the years. Its latest tech is the Meta Quest 3, which offers the first-ever mixed-reality headset to its users. The latest headset uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chipset, focusing on its massive processing capabilities, which can handle significant tasks and offer improved gaming or running app experiences.

On the other hand, YouTube is known for its 4K quality available streams, which will depend on videos that offer the said resolution as shot. The company also offered a 1080p Premium streaming quality last year, and it was made exclusive to subscribers or paid users of the platform, offering more than improvements on its resolution but also enhanced bitrate.

In today's version of YouTube, 8K streaming is already available, but this would only work for various considerations like the uploads that shot the videos on 8K and watching it on a device that supports it. That being said, YouTube for Quest is now offering 8K video streaming, but only in the SDR format, and while it is a downgrade from HDR, it is a great start.
