Rivian Supercharges EV Experience With Smarter Energy Monitoring, Faster Charging Speeds

Expect to see more changes for Rivian's Energy app.

Rivian is making EV charging smarter for all users. The electric giant is committed to revolutionizing the way electric vehicle owners engage with their energy consumption by introducing a powerful software update to enhance both charging effectiveness and energy transparency.

This release applies to all Rivian vehicles as well as smartphone users. It provides greater insights into battery use and a more intuitive interface to assist EV drivers in being better informed about how they manage their energy.

Smarter Charging Insights With Updated Energy App

Central to the update is Rivian's improved Energy app, which introduces two important sections: "Charging" and "Energy Monitor." According to The Verge, these tabs offer real-time, granular information on how much energy is going in and coming out of the vehicle.

The Charging tab tells the user exactly how much electricity is getting to the battery versus what's being consumed by systems such as HVAC and accessories.

The Energy Monitor tab provides a detailed chart detailing how various components like climate controls, outlets, and drive systems use power when the vehicle is parked or moving. It is said that this end-to-end view will help "democratize access" to energy use information for more effective range management, according to Rivian's Chief Software Officer Wassym Bensaid.

Trip Target Feature Improves Navigation Efficiency

The "Trip Target" feature is another highlight. If a navigation trip involves a charging stop, this feature scans the trip and alerts drivers the instant they've arrived at an ideal charge level to keep going. No more wasted time waiting to reach 100%—time saved and battery life prolonged.

An animated mascot, Yeti, now makes energy monitoring an enjoyable and educational process. This mascot responds according to driving efficiency: smiling for maximum utilization and frowning when energy is lost, along with providing suggestions for improved battery performance.

On-Demand Battery Preconditioning Increases Charging Speed

Rivian is also solving a fan-favorite customer ask: on-demand battery preconditioning. With this feature, customers can pre-warm or pre-cool their battery even before driving to a charger, significantly enhancing the charging speed. A new banner indicates when preconditioning is in progress and when it's done, eliminating the mystery of battery management.

DC Fast Charging Gets a Power Upgrade

First- and second-generation Rivian models are experiencing enhanced DC fast-charging speeds with this software update. Most noteworthy, Gen 2 Large Pack battery now charges at up to 215kW, which provides a 15% increase in range after 15 minutes. This is a result of improved battery cell temperatures and simulations that reflect actual drive scenarios.

Future Smart Charging and Bidirectional Features

Rivian's vision extends beyond this announcement. On the horizon is a Smart Charging solution that allows customers to schedule home charging during off-peak times, saving money and lowering emissions.

In 2025, Rivian will introduce bidirectional charging, making its EVs into portable power sources that can feed energy back into homes, devices, or even other electric vehicles.

Indeed, the carmaker is filling gaps by equipping owners with smarter tools, energy visibility, and actual performance gains. And with its ride-optimizing software, Rivian aims to be one of the most customer-centric participants in the EV industry.
