The Batman: Arkham video game series pits Batman against some of his greatest foes for some truly memorable boss battles. It's one of the hallmarks of the series, and from Killer Croc to the Joker, fans have come to expect clever confrontations with Batman's iconic villains.

While we wait to see what boss battles Rocksteady will cook up from the upcoming Batman: Arkham Knight, why not take a stroll down memory lane and relive some of Batman's greatest virtual battles in this "Top 10 Batman: Arkham Boss Fights" video from DC All Access.

Each game in the series is represented here, even if some of these "boss battles" aren't ones in the traditional sense. Three boss battles from Batman: Arkham Origins make the list, with Electrocutioner coming in at number nine, Firefly at number five and Deathstroke's deadly duel with the Caped Crusader ranking in at number three.

Clocking in at number 10 is one of the franchise's more controversial fights — venom-infused Joker. Transforming the cunning and ruthless Joker into a mindless rage monster rubbed some fans the wrong way, but it's hard to deny it made for one climactic finale.

The Riddler's deadly maze in Batman: Arkham City takes the number eight spot and stands out as one of the most creative boss encounters in the franchise, as players don't actually fight the Riddler at all. Hulking monsters Killer Croc, Clayface and Solomon Grundy all make the list as well, though none of them take the number one spot.

That honor rests with Mr. Freeze, whose boss battle in Batman: Arkham City still stands as one of the most unique confrontations seen in a Batman game. Batman can't take on Mr. Freeze and his superior tech head-on, and instead must ambush the villain in a variety of different ways to take him down. The only catch is that no method works more than once, as Mr. Freeze adapts to Batman's tactics and will counter you if you attempt to try the same move a second time.

It forced players to use all the skills and tactics at Batman's disposal to come out victorious, and for that, it is more than worthy of claiming the top spot. The previous games in the series have spoiled us when it comes to great boss encounters. Here's hoping Batman's inevitable battle with the Arkham Knight this summer will be just as memorable as the boss fights that have come before.

Batman: Arkham Knight releases on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC on June 2.
