Fans of Fox's long-running series The X-Files are still excited about last week's news that the show will return for a six-episode event.

The announcement however left us with questions. Which characters will come back to the series? Will we see some old favorites?

Fox revealed that the show's stars Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny, who play Dana Scully and Fox Mulder, will of course be there — but what about the other characters we grew to love as the series progressed?

Thanks to Duchovny, we now know two fan favorites will return: Walter Skinner and the Cigarette-Smoking Man.

"There's Gillian and I, we're original," said Duchovny on the Late Show with David Letterman. "Mitch Pileggi will come back, and the Cigarette-Smoking Man – if that means anything to anyone – will be coming back."

X-Files viewers know the mysterious chain-smoking man – portrayed by William B. Davis – as the arch nemesis of Mulder, who went on to become the show's main antagonist.

Fans will remember Skinner, played by Pileggi, as the head of the FBI agency in charge of The X-Files division — basically the boss of Mulder and Scully. Skinner was a central character throughout the series.

It's been 13 years since Fox aired the last episode of The X-Files, but that wasn't the very end — two theatrical movies followed, with the last film coming out in 2008.

Also returning to the series is executive producer Chris Carter.

"I think of it as a 13-year commercial break," said Carter. "The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories."

For those not in the know, The X-Files follows two special FBI agents who investigate supernatural cases. The show premiered in 1993 and ran for nine seasons, making a hit with fans and critics alike. It went on to become one of the longest-running science fiction series on television.

The X-Files remains popular with fans over a decade later — the revival comes thanks to fans campaigning for its return, who made heavy use of Twitter hashtag #Xfiles2015. Fox plans on finally giving fans what they want, with production on the six new episodes of The X-Files starting this summer.
