Slowly but surely DC's Convergence event has been picking up steam. While the event's first three issues left plenty to be desired, since issue four the stakes have been raised considerably.

Issue #6 feels like what this event should have been in the first place. Deimos has taken control of the planet Telos for his own nefarious purposes and banished Brainiac. He commands the various heroes and villains assembled on Telos to pledge their allegiance to him or face his wrath.

The heroes of Earth-2 aren't content with submitting to their new overlord without a fight, so they begin to forge alliances with the various heroes of other cities to confront Deimos. We get to see the classic Teen Titans, Barry Allen as the Flash and numerous other heroes all unite under one banner, ready to bring Deimos to justice.

It's exciting to see various heroes across the DC multiverse join forces, but it also kind of undermines the point of the event in the first place. Having a "big bad" that all the heroes unite against definitely simplifies the original premise of Convergence. This event was supposed to pit hero against hero in a battle for survival, in an arena where there are no good guys or bad guys, only survivors. That isn't really the case anymore, and the entire premise suffers for it.

This issue also marks the first time we've seen what the "Convergence" looks like to those watching from outside of Telos. New 52 Superman, Supergirl and the Red Lanterns all watch in awe as a Telos begins to merge into their reality. None are sure what to do, and Superman adopts a "wait and see" approach to handling the situation.

It adds some much needed perspective to what is at stake. Originally, whatever city "won" Brainiac's sick tournament would be granted the right to live and a new place in the DC universe, or so Brainiac and Telos said. The rules have now changed with Deimos' takeover. He could pose a real threat to the wider DC universe if he isn't dealt with, and Dick Grayson may be the key to stopping him.

If you've been wondering why this event seems to focus so heavily on Grayson, now we know why. He is the "everyman," and also the only character who can relate to Telos now that we know the truth of his origin. Grayson convincing Telos to fight against Deimos may be the only way to save the day.

Next week's issue promises a battle royale that we've been waiting this entire event for. Let's hope it delivers, but if the past has taught us anything, it might be best to go ahead and lower your expectations.
