Three years ago, CD Projekt Red was in a very different place. As of now, the developer's still handling the launch of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt: glitches need to be addressed, DLC needs to be released and basic maintenance is taking place. Three years ago, however, the studio was still working diligently on the game...though The Witcher 3 wasn't the only title in development.

Back in October 2012, CD Projekt Red announced that it had created a secondary team: while the core group of developers was still working on The Witcher 3, another team was working on a different project. This new game - titled Cyberpunk 2077 - would be far removed from the fantastical worlds of The Witcher.

It would be as hard as science fiction can get, and the teaser trailer was awesome...but, in the following three years, fans haven't heard anything about the project.

Unfortunately, it looks like that won't be changing anytime soon: CD Projekt Red won't be talking about Cyberpunk 2077 until 2017.

Speaking with Reuters, CD Projekt Red chief executive Adam Kicinski said:

"We hope and we are certain that Cyberpunk has even bigger commercial potential. It is too early to talk about it, though. This year, and the next one will be the years of the Witcher."

It's understandable: The Witcher 3 is out now, and launching a game is something that requires full support from the studio that created it. On top of that, CD Projekt Red also has the game's two expansions to work on, as well as the smaller pieces of free DLC. It's a lot, and it doesn't really make sense to split the workforce as such a critical time.

That being said, if Cyberpunk 2077 has been in development for at least three years already, it could mean that the game is having trouble getting off the ground. By 2017, it'll have been in development for at least five years - that's a long dev cycle, even for an RPG. Hopefully, CD Projekt Red is just taking their time - but, to be honest, this sort of development schedule usually isn't a good thing.

With any luck, CD Projekt Red is just taking its time, and nothing's wrong with the game...either way, it doesn't look like fans will find out anytime soon.
