Summer Infant recalls the rechargeable batteries in its video baby monitors after receiving reports of overheating monitors, including reports involving smoke and minor property damage.

The recall involves about 800,000 rechargeable batteries used in Summer Infant's range of handheld color video baby monitors. The batteries in question are black and have a size of 1 1/2" x 2 1/4" x 1/4". They have a label marked "TCL" on the lower right corner.

The company voluntarily recalled its batteries after 22 customers contacted the company reporting incidents of smoke and overheating, including incidents of minor property damage.

The batteries in question have one of these character combinations on the serial number at the back of the battery.

Summer Infant retailed its baby monitors with A/C adaptors and a camera for $150 to $350 mass merchants, including Babies "R" Us, Wal-Mart and Target, from February 2010 to 2012.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission urges customers who own a Summer Infant baby monitor to remove the battery immediately and call Summer Infant at (800)426-8627 anytime or visit the website www.summerinfant.com/batteryrecall for replacements.

The rechargeable batteries are used only for the monitors. Customers may continue to use the camera and A/C adaptor for their video monitor systems, according to Summer Infant.

"Replacement batteries are due to arrive at Summer Infant by May 20, 2014. Once they have been received, you should receive your replacement battery within 7 to 10 business days. You will also receive a postage paid envelope to return your old battery for property," says a statement on the Summer Infant website.

This is not the first time that Summer Infant recalled its rechargeable baby monitor batteries. In 2011, the company recalled about 58,000 batteries of its Summer Infant Slim and Secure color video baby monitors that run on unmarked rechargeable batteries due to burn hazards. At least five people contacted Summer Infant to report incidents of ruptured batteries.
