Does anyone remember Rampage? It was originally an arcade game about...well, rampaging. Players took control of a giant monster - either a gorilla, a lizard, or a wolf - and proceeded to tear down buildings for points. It was mindless fun, and was a great game to play with friends...but it's been a long time since the series was what most people would call 'relevant.'

Of course, that doesn't mean that Hollywood can't step in and make a movie about it!

To be fair, Rampage lends itself relatively well to popcorn cinema: considering the success of Pacific Rim and Godzilla, there's clearly a market for giant monster fights and tons of destruction - but if New Line Cinema is going to resurrect a long-dormant cult classic arcade game, they'll need someone with serious star-power to pull in more casual movie-goers.

Good news: New Line Cinema has their man...and it's none other than Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson.

To be honest, the casting makes a ton of sense: Rampage is basically a playable disaster movie with giant monsters, and Johnson's latest flick, San Andreas, is currently enjoying tremendous box office sales. At this point, Rampage may end up being San Andreas with a couple more giant lizards tossed in. On top of that, New Line handled both San Andreas and Rampage - from the looks of things, Johnson is headed off of one disaster movie set and straight onto another.

According to Deadline, Johnson will finish work on Furious 8 before moving onto Rampage. Then again, Furious 8 isn't scheduled for release until 2017 (Johnson is currently filming Central Intelligence alongside Kevin Hart), so it'll likely be quite a while before fans get to see the Rock land a People's Elbow on a giant gorilla.
