LG has announced it has no plans underway to update its latest flagship smartphone, the G4, to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. The just released smartphone, along with its year-old counterpart the G3, may skip straight to Android M.

Last week we reported that a similar announcement was made regarding the year-old G3, upsetting owners who had been waiting on a fix for the various issues affecting their smartphones since the Android 5.0 Lollipop update wreaked havoc on many of their devices, causing battery drain, slow charging, and disrupted Wi-Fi connectivity among other issues.

While the G4, which shipped with Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box, hasn't had the kind of problems with the Lollipop OS as its predecessor, consumers who shelled out a premium for the brand new smartphone expect the latest technology.

Android 5.1.1 Lollipop contains performance improvements and important new features such as device protection, which disables the use of a phone if not signed in for with the owner's Google password, even if a factory reset is performed on the device.

O2 and its regional branch in Greece separately confirmed the lack of development of an update on their respective Facebook pages. It was also the Greek regional arm of the company that confirmed the same scenario for the G3.

While neither response definitively stated that there will be no Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update at any point for the G3 and G4, the fact that nothing is currently in development leads to the speculation that both smartphones will make the jump straight to Android M.

Google is expected to release its latest OS in several months, so once LG and its affiliated carriers get to work on Android M for the G3 and G4, it could be next year before either phone sees a significant new OS update.
