Dark Souls was always a beautiful game. Sure, it wasn't the most technically sound game ever built (especially the PC version) but Lordran was an exquisitely-detailed world, and was filled to the brim with both breathtaking landscapes and grotesque monsters. It's a beautifully dark world, and one that many gamers still visit to this day.

As with most modern PC games, Dark Souls is no stranger to mods. Many of said mods are built with graphical touch-ups in mind (one mod in particular even improved on From Software's own coding) - however, few of them are quite as drastic as this.

Dubbed the 'Limbo mod,' this new Reshade preset basically turns the lush world of Dark Souls into a black-and-white void. The entire heads-up display, textures, shadows, everything - it's all stripped out, only to be replaced by a stark monochrome palette. It may sound ridiculous, but there's a strange beauty to Dark Souls without color...

The mod, first discovered by Reddit user CystisomaMagna, can be enabled with a few easy-to-use tools. It'll take a bit of work, but once it's done, you'll be able to play Dark Souls in an entirely new way - one that makes an already difficult game even harder.

Given that the brightness of the game's world is dictated by how 'light' each one of its textures are, it doesn't take much for the Limbo mod to completely drown Dark Souls in a pitch-black void. The fact that torches don't work doesn't exactly help, so locations like the Tomb of the Giants (which was already pitch-black) are almost unplayable.

That being said, when you're outside and the sun in shining down, it can look absolutely gorgeous (thanks to tarunschmarun for the images):

Again, it doesn't take all that much to get the mod up and running: if you're interested in checking it out, YouTube user Lobos Jr published a tutorial that should get the mod running in no time. As with all mods, as long as you already have a working copy of Dark Souls, everything else is free.

And, if black-and-white isn't your thing, there's always the mod in which Dark Souls fans can fight it out as the game's bosses - and yes, it's just as awesome as it sounds.
