With the OnePlus 2 set to release on July 27, the excitement is palpable. As the unveiling of the much-awaited smartphone draws nearer, leaked benchmark results of the OnePlus 2 have surfaced online.

The benchmark results, which showed up on Weibo, pitted the OnePlus 2 against the OnePlus One to give a glimpse into what the next-gen smartphone's processor speed will be.

The OnePlus 2 will tout the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 and not the much-awaited Snapdragon 820 processor. However, the chipset dubbed the "ultimate connected computer processor" will be a different version.

"We worked very closely with Qualcomm's engineers to integrate an improved version of the chipset (v2.1) in the OnePlus 2, and fine-tuned both hardware and software," said OnePlus. "The 2 will be 'cooler than ever.'"

Considering that the company promised us a different version of the Snapdragon 810 processor, one would expect a faster performance from the OnePlus 2. However, the benchmark results tell a different story altogether.

The leaked results reveal that the Snapdragon 810 scored the same as the one-year-old Snapdragon 801 processor on the older iteration, the OnePlus One. The results show that the One A2001, the OnePlus 2 model, scored 51460, which was marginally better than the 51011 notched up by the OnePlus One.

Before you question the performance of the Snapdragon 810 v2.1, remember the Xiaomi Mi Note Pro running on the same chipset notched up over 60000. A possibility exists that OnePlus has intentionally underclocked the chipset on the OnePlus 2 to counter the overheating issue, which plagued other versions.

Alternatively, the leaked benchmark may not be of the final version that is meant for the 5.7-inch OnePlus 2. The company is possibly experimenting with the flagship prior to finalizing the release version. In the event that this is true, then the OnePlus 2 will boast faster speeds than those indicated by the leaked benchmark results.

The leaked listing of the OnePlus 2 by retailer OppoMart also points to a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 v2.1 processor for the impending smartphone.

With a few days to go before the device's unveiling, we will soon know if the OnePlus 2's improved processor lives up to expectations.
