LG will officially announce the LG G3 at a press event on May 27. A leaked image of the smartphone shows off its sleek body and redesigned lock screen.

No other smartphone company has stepped up its presence in as big a way as LG has in the last couple of years. The company has been going head to head with long time rival Samsung in what appears to be a race to the finish. Last year, LG announced it was working on a smartphone with a flexible display and said the handset would ship later in the year. As what is now known as the LG G Flex was nearing an official introduction, Samsung announced it too was working on a handset that would feature a flexible display. Samsung managed to beat LG in that race by a few weeks when it began shipping the Galaxy Round, which was initially only available in South Korea, while LG's G Flex was on sale around the world and offered by AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile in the U.S.

LG isn't about to let Samsung beat it in another race and that race also revolves around displays. The LG G3 will reportedly be the first smartphone to ship in the U.S. with a Quad HD display. The resolution is extremely high for a mobile device, coming in at 2560 x 1440. Samsung is going to put up a fight with its rumored Galaxy S5 Prime, which is also expected to use a Quad HD display.

The always-reliable evleaks has once again given us a glimpse at a device we're not supposed to see yet. The tipster posted an image of the black LG G3, showing off its front and back.

The smartphone is powered on and we get a good look at its 5.5-inch Quad HD display and its new lock screen design. The photo also gives us a closer look at its sleek (possibly) metal case with redesigned rear buttons, which now also include a fingerprint sensor. The G3 will be LG's 2014 flagship smartphone and there was no way it was going to release a handset to go up against Apple's iPhone 5s (iPhone 6 in September) and Samsung Galaxy S5, which all have fingerprint scanners on board.

The LG G3 is really shaping up to be a very impressive device and its new display will almost certainly be one of the main reasons possible potential iPhone 5s and Samsung Galaxy S5 customers choose the G3. The LG G3 will officially be announced on May 27 at a scheduled LG press event. We'll keep you updated on all things LG G3 as they happen.
