At the VidCon conference for online video creators, Meerkat announced that it's teaming up with GoPro to bring live-streaming HD video directly to its platform with the connected device.

GoPro 3 consumers will have the ability to sync the camera to the Meerkat app to enable live-streaming. With just a shake of an iPhone, users can start the stream instantly.

This option is only available for iOS right now, but the company says it will expand this feature for Android. While the live-streaming option will only work with GoPro 3, the app's next update will make the shake-it-to-stream compatible with the GoPro 4.

This is the first time Meerkat has extended its broadcasting capabilities outside of the smartphone. Bringing HD video content to the app is a solid step to further distance itself from rival Periscope.

Previously, Meerkat had announced an embedded live stream option that lets users pick from three different sizes, upload a cover image, and enable or disable comments — a feature that was promoted by Discovery Channel during Shark Week.

Although Adobe's Digital Index found that Periscope is more popular among users, the app does not allow for embedding videos, and it doesn't enable live-stream beyond mobile devices. However, videos on the app can be integrated into Twitter — a logical feature, seeing as Periscope is owned by the social media platform.

The new GoPro live-streaming feature is available for Meerkat iOS users today.
