Final Fantasy VII is being reimagined for the current generation, but it's not going to look or play like it did back in 1997.

Specifically, Final Fantasy VII remake director Tetsuya Nomura has gone on record to say that there will be some big changes coming, including changes to the original game's turn-based combat system.

Speaking with Official PlayStation Magazine, Nomura says the modifications to the game's combat will be "dramatic."

"We're not going to be changing it into a shooter or something like that," he says. "We are going to be bringing dramatic changes, but we want to make sure it's still recognizable."

He doesn't elaborate more, but has previously said that the team is looking to make both the game's visuals and gameplay more "realistic." That means impressive, modern day visuals and likely a more real-time, action-oriented combat system.

It makes sense. Final Fantasy VII released more than 15 years ago. The game industry has changed leaps and bounds since them. While the game's story and characters are timeless, it would be a wasted opportunity if Square-Enix didn't look at the gameplay and identify areas where aspects could be modified or improved. 

Nomura also tells OPM that the remake will not be using the character models from the Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children movie. The film served a sequel to the events of the game and featured some impressive CGI work. However, that film was released a decade ago. Much more is possible when it comes to 3D character models, so the team won't be looking to Advent Children for inspiration.

Nomura has previously said no additional characters will be added to the Final Fantasy VII remake, so fans can rest easy there. If you are a fan of the game's original battle system, however, you may want to hold onto your copy of the original Final Fantasy VII.
