Editing video on a smartphone may already be a more attractive option than it was just a few years ago, but it's still hardly an ideal solution for anyone looking to do some serious work. A new (and already successful) Kickstarter project that launched last month, however, is promising to make the whole process a fair bit easier.

Known as the Gnarbox (or GNARBOX, as the company prefers), the device itself looks more or less like a rugged portable hard drive (and is indeed rugged and waterproof), but it packs enough features to let you leave your laptop behind if you're looking to travel as light as possible. That includes a quad-core 2.2 GHz CPU and eight-core GPU, 4 GB of RAM, 128 GB of flash storage, a built-in rechargeable battery that promises 6-8 hours battery life, and SD, microSD and a pair of USB 3.0 ports to actually get your footage onto the device.

The Gnarbox also acts as a Wi-Fi hotspot, which is how your smartphone (and up to three others at a time, if you like) actually interacts with the device. From there you'll be able to use Gnarbox's own video editing app, which offers a number of basic editing capabilities including cropping, slow motion, and various light and color adjustments. That's all able to be done in full HD, and then shared online in full resolution as well. Upload up to 128 GB of your images from a GoPro Hero or any DSLR camera to the Gnarbox, connect your phone to a hotspot, open the app, edit and share.

Those willing to go the Kickstarter route can get their order in now for $149 (40 percent off the eventual MSRP of $249), with it expected to ship in March of next year.
