We recently reported Samsung's confirmed list of devices set to receive an update to the latest Android OS, Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The list included most of Samsung's previously released smartphones and tablets, and included the just released Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+, Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, S6 Duos, Note 4, Note 4 Duos, Note Edge, Galaxy Alpha, and Galaxy Tab A.

To the dismay of many users, however, the list did not include one of the company's most popular smartphones, 2014's Galaxy S5. The device certainly appears worthy of an update along with its more current brethren. After all, it was still the company's flagship device until recently being replaced in April by its successors the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. Many S5 users have stuck with the phone as opposed to updating to an S6, partially due to the lack of a microSD expansion slot and removable battery in the newer versions.

The S5 can certainly handle the update given its impressive specs. So why was it left out of the list of phones and tablets confirmed for an upgrade, and will it receive Android 6.0 Marshmallow?

The answer is that the Galaxy S5 will most likely receive an Android 6.0 Marshmallow update at some point. Samsung's list is not complete, and it announced that other devices would eventually be added. All of the phones and tablets on Samsung's initial list were released within the past year. Generally, smartphone manufacturers such as Samsung release new OS updates to their latest devices first, and then work backwards. While part of this is marketing strategy intended to entice consumers to purchase their latest devices, it also makes sense in that owners of the newer smartphones would feel slighted if users of older devices received updates before them.

Also, if we look at Samsung's history with updates, the Galaxy S4 received the Android 5.0 Lollipop update, so it stands to reason that the S5 will eventually in fact be getting Android 6.0 Marshmallow. We expect it to be added to the list at some point and of course will bring you the news on the S5 and other devices scheduled to receive Android 6.0 Marshmallow as soon as it emerges.
