When you've got a video game based on an unfinished movie script by legendary Japanese director Akira Kurosawa (Seven Samurai), you make sure that it eventually comes out.

Thankfully, although initially announced for the PlayStation 3, Sony announced that Ni-Oh will make it to retail shelves for the PlayStation 4 sometime next year.

In 2010, Team Ninja, the game developer behind Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive, announced that it was taking on development of the game, but at that time, no other details immersed. However, at this year's E3, Sony showed off the game last year at the Tokyo Game Show and this year's E3.

The game, now a PlayStation 4 exclusive, also has a trailer, showing off some of the game's mechanics and gameplay.

Ni-Oh, a historical fantasy action game, is set in 16th century Japan; in the game, players take on the role of a samurai warrior, who looks a lot like The Witcher's Geralt. In the game, players must guide this warrior to his destiny.

Gameplay, at least according to the new trailer, seems to resemble Dark Souls. Last year, Team Ninja confirmed that their developers were still working on the title.

"I have heard rumors that it's been stopped, but it's actually very much in development," said Team Ninja's Yosuke Hayashi to Venture Beat. "We still need a little time before showing it off, but it is starting to come together and feel good. You should definitely keep an eye out for it in the future."

Apparently, that future has come, because although Ni-Oh was originally announced ten years ago, in 2005, it now has a tentative release date set for 2016.

Here's a little Ni-Oh trivia: The original project idea was to make it multimedia, with both a game and film based on the lost Kurosawa script. However, somewhere along the way, the project became just the game.
