Sales for the Xbox One gaming console more than doubled from May to June, according to Microsoft.

No specific figures have been released by the company so far, but the sharp increase in sales all goes according to Microsoft's plan.

In May, Microsoft announced that it will begin selling the Xbox One gaming console for only $399, as it drops the Kinect sensor from the bundle which was formerly sold for $499.

The decision to drop the Kinect sensor from the bundle was spurred by the lagging sales of the Xbox One behind Sony's PlayStation 4, which was being sold at $399. By placing the Xbox One at the same price as the PlayStation 4, Microsoft hoped that their gaming console will be able to catch up with the booming sales of the rival console.

The decision has not yet paid off, with the PlayStation 4 holding on to the top spot as the best-selling gaming console for the sixth month in a row, according to industry-tracking company The NPD Group.

"Since the new Xbox One offering launched on June 9th, we've seen sales of Xbox One more than double in the U.S., compared to sales in May, and solid growth in Xbox 360 sales," said Microsoft in a statement posted on the Xbox Wire, the official blog of the gaming console.

Microsoft also said that it is "excited to welcome so many fans to Xbox this summer," especially with the huge selection of games that will be released this year for the Xbox One such as Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Ori and the Blind Forest, Forza Horizon 2 and Sunset Overdrive. The games will be added to an already strong lineup of games that include Call of Duty: Advanced WarfareAssassin's Creed Unity, Evolve, Destiny, and Grand Theft Auto V.

The entire gaming industry has been doing very well, with $736.4 million in sales of new physical gaming products in the United States in June, which is a 24 percent increase from the $593.5 million in sales posted in the corresponding month last year.

"The 106 percent increase in hardware sales versus June 2013 was lifted entirely by console hardware sales, which were up by over 200 percent," said Liam Callahan, an analyst for NPD.

Microsoft is also drumming up excitement for the release of games from the fall season heading into the holidays, which will begin with the launch of Madden NFL 15 next month. The company added that it is preparing deals and promotions for the holiday season.
