The Nexus 5X for $349 is already a pretty awesome deal, but the pot has just gotten a whole lot sweeter, as Google is putting the smartphone up for $199 if it's activated with Project Fi.

Not too long ago, Google dropped the invitation system for the Sprint- and T-Mobile-powered Project Fi, making it available to any person living in the United States with a Gmail account. However, the wireless service only works with the Nexus 6, Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, certain unlocked handsets and recent Apple and Samsung tablets.

This $150 price drop for the smartphone in question is probably Google's way of letting a lot more customers in on the Project Fi shindig, and from any perspective, it's a great offer.

Google clears up all the details, noting that consumers who partake in the bargain risk paying the full amount if they don't comply with the guidelines.

"If you purchase a Nexus 5X from fi.google.com, the discounted price will automatically apply during checkout. You must then activate Fi service on the same account within 30 days of device shipment, or an additional $150 will be charged to your Google Payments account to match the full price of the device," Google says.

As a refresher, the Nexus 5X sports a 5.2-inch screen with a 1,080 x 1,920 resolution, clocking in at 423 ppi. It has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 under the hood coupled with 2 GB worth of RAM. Out of the box, it runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Storage-wise, it's available in 16 GB and 32 GB variants.

Google has the 16 GB model listed for $199 or $8.29 a month for 24 months and the 32 GB for $249 or $10.38 a month. The plan that comes with it will have a base fee of $20 a month for unlimited texts and calls and an additional $10 for every gigabyte of data consumed.

For those who can no longer hold on to their seats, the discounted Nexus 5X can be ordered at the Project Fi sign-up page.
