It has been reported that Dylan O'Brien, the star of the popular film franchise Maze Runner, has been badly injured on the set of the third installment in the series only a few weeks into filming.

In an exclusive with E! News, a PR representative for O'Brien disclosed what happened to the star.

"He was in an accident and is being treated in a local hospital," the source said.

"Dylan O'Brien was injured yesterday while filming Maze Runner: The Death Cure in Vancouver, Canada," a spokesperson for 20th Century Fox said. "He was immediately transferred to a local hospital for observation and treatment. Production on the film will be shut down while he recovers. Our thoughts go out to Dylan for a full and speedy recovery."

For those uninitiated with Maze Runner or its sequel, the movies are based on a series of young adult sci-fi books that follow the story of Thomas (O'Brien), a teenager who wakes up with no memory of who he is or where he came from, and finds himself trapped in a large maze with a number of other young people in a dystopian, post-apocalyptic society. Its follow-up Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials was released last year. The current movie was scheduled for a 2017 premiere.

The third movie in the Maze Runner series began filming on Feb. 29

O'Brien himself is no stranger to sci-fi. Besides his leading role in the Maze Runner franchise, the actor is best known for his role as "Stiles" Stilinski on the supernatural MTV show Teen Wolf.

As of now, the type of injury O'Brien sustained while filming has not been released — but it can easily be deduced that, if the film is shutting down production during his recuperation, chances are it's probably serious. While we also know that the injury happened on set, there is no word on under what circumstances it occurred — whether it was during a stunt or whether it was an off-camera incident.

TMZ also reported on the incident, and stated that O'Brien's accident left him with "multiple broken bones."
