Huawei is planning to roll out a new flagship in the United States later this year, going toe-to-toe with the likes of the Apple iPhone 6s, the HTC 10, the LG G5 and the Samsung Galaxy S7, and perhaps it could finally be the Huawei P9.

The news comes from none other than the Huawei chief of consumer electronics Richard Yu, indicating that the company is more than determined to come out on top of the heated smartphone competition.

"We want to become No. 1 as a premium brand," Yu tells The Wall Street Journal in an interview.

As for the hardware specifications of the Huawei P9, it's expected to house a Kirin 950 plus 3 GB worth of RAM along with 32 GB of internal storage, sporting a 1080p 5.2-inch display. To make it last throughout the day, it's believed to be crammed with a 3,000 mAh battery pack, according to a recent leak.

Now, what makes it stand out from the Galaxy S7 and iPhone 6s is the dual 12 MP camera setup on the rear, tapping Leica optics to take mobile photography to a whole new level. On that note, the iPhone 7 Plus is purportedly going to level the playing field on this department with a dual camera system on the back as well.

At any rate, Yu is resolute about dominating the smartphone market, banking on the presumed Huawei P9. He even said that the company will eventually have the largest market share in five years back in February.

However, that's easier said than done. Huawei will have to do a lot of catching up to beat the current leader Samsung and second-place holder Apple.

According to the International Data Corporation or IDC, Samsung has 21.4 percent and Apple has 18.7 percent of the market shares during the fourth quarter of 2015. On the other hand, Huawei held on to 8.1 percent.

Nevertheless, it looks like the Huawei P9 could be the start of the smartphone maker's revitalized efforts to conquer the market.
