Add Microsoft to the ever-growing pile of virtual reality companies vying for your real attention.

Microsoft has announced that it will release its Mixed Reality program to Xbox One and the upcoming Project Scorpio in 2018. Mixed Reality is the new name for Windows Holographic, Microsoft's proprietary technology that mixes virtual reality elements called "holograms" into real-world elements.

This foray will potentially pit Microsoft against brands such as its chief rival PlayStation VR, as well as established VR like Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.

Windows Sees Into Its VR Future

Alex Kipman, Microsoft's Technical Fellow, wrote on Microsoft blog about the company's future moves into the VR market. He said that Microsoft aims to build Windows 10 to be the "most complete platform" across mixed reality devices and experiences. This is why Windows partnered up with leading hardware companies like ASUS, Acer, HP, Dell, Lenovo, and 3Glasses to create headsets that will carry the Mixed Reality platform.

Of course, Microsoft has its eyes set on the gaming VR experience. With Microsoft lagging behind its rival PlayStation 4 in terms of sales, and with the release of Nintendo Switch on March 3, Microsoft needs to bolster its offensive for the perennial console wars. The introduction of Mixed Reality may be the silver bullet the company needs to tilt the balance power to its favor.

"We're also excited to share that Windows Mixed Reality experiences will light up on other devices over time, beyond desktop and Microsoft HoloLens. Our plan is to bring mixed reality content to the Xbox One family of devices, including Project Scorpio, in 2018," wrote Kipman.

Project Scorpio is an upcoming upgraded Xbox One, an answer to Sony's PlayStation 4 Pro. It will have 4L-display capabilities and virtual reality support.

First Look At First Mixed Reality Device

Microsoft unveiled in this year's Game Developers' Conference the first device that runs on Mixed Reality platform. Called Acer Windows Mixed Reality Development Edition, the specs are as follows:

• Two high-resolution liquid crystal displays at 1440 x 1440
• Display refresh rate up to 90 Hz (native)
• Built-in audio out and microphone support through 3.5mm jack
• Single cable with HDMI 2.0 (display) and USB 3.0 (data) for connectivity

This Microsoft-Acer MR device is slated for rollout this March. The device will be part of Microsoft's developer kit, which also includes the software development kit, as well as documentation and access to Windows 10 insider preview builds.

This is part of Microsoft's efforts to encourage and "empower even more developers to create in mixed reality." Kipman likewise invited developers to build content for Windows Mixed Reality by joining the Microsoft MR program.
