In an era of high-tech, top-tier flagships, one can argue that there's not much you can improve on anymore. That law of diminishing returns is at play here, as one might think that after touch controls, Infinity Displays, and octa-core processors, what's next in smartphone innovation that'll truly wow consumers?

No one knows for sure, to be clear. But instead of coming up with a newfangled innovation, OnePlus will focus on one that's already there — the camera. New reports now state that with the OnePlus 5, launching this summer, it'll be all about the camera.

Most reports claim the OnePlus 5 will sport dual cameras on the back, but it seems that's not the only the camera upgrade the phone is getting this year. OnePlus on Thursday, May 18, announced that it's working with DxO to improve its phone in terms of photography performance.

OnePlus Partners With DxO To Beef Up The OnePlus 5's Camera

DxO, for the uninitiated, is the company behind the DxOMark photography benchmark, a highly touted ratings system for evaluating cameras on mobile devices. Google Pixel previously boasted the highest score, with the Samsung Galaxy S8 a point shy behind. But DxOMark recently updated its scores, with the HTC U11 now sitting at the top spot.

"A smooth and premium flagship experience requires a deliberate combination of hardware and software that work together seamlessly," OnePlus posted on its forums. "OnePlus' cameras have been improving with each new flagship product we've released. There's always more to be done to give you the ability to take clearer, more beautiful photos. Sometimes finding the right partner is one of the quickest ways to take things to the next level."

OnePlus didn't specify the resulting photography improvements born out of the partnership, but it did say that the company is confident users will be able to take "some of the clearest photos around." Similarly, OnePlus didn't give any detailed camera metrics on the OnePlus 5, nor did it confirm whether dual cameras are to be expected. That said, you can be sure that the phone won't disappoint in the camera department.

We'll have to wait until the phone is launched to see how it fares with other top-of-the-line smartphone cameras in the market. But with DxO directly involved, it's easy to imagine that the OnePlus 5 could easily shoot up the top spot in DxOMark rankings.

OnePlus 5 Rumors

As for the OnePlus 5 itself, not much has been said about the flagship — at least in an official capacity. Rumors, on the other hand, have run amok even before OnePlus itself confirmed that there was going to be a follow-up to the OnePlus 3T.

Several rumors claim the OnePlus 5 will sport dual cameras, as mentioned above, although it's contested whether they'll be outfitted in a vertical or horizontal fashion.

In terms of internals, the OnePlus 5 is expected to pack in a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chip, up to a whopping 8 GB of RAM as per some reports, and up to 256 GB of internal storage.
