Google is making Gmail smarter. In addition to generating smart replies, both the app and the web version will now automatically recognize addresses, phone numbers, and contacts and convert them into hyperlinks.

Gmail, Inbox Gets Better With Hyperlinks

Tapping a hyperlink will launch an app, but that depends on what type of hyperlink it is. For instance, tapping an address brings up Maps, while tapping a phone number starts a call when a user is on mobile. Tapping on an email address brings up the user's default email app and compose a message immediately. It's a pretty basic feature that incredibly hasn't been integrated into Gmail until now.

Both Android and iOS have had phone number hyperlink conversion for some time now, but as The Verge notes, it's mostly through their operating systems. The rest, such as phone number and addresses, are new to Gmail. It's truly baffling how this seemingly obvious functionality wasn't added earlier, especially considering the fact Google is a big proponent of context-aware OS ecosystems. Remember Now on Tap?

Automatic hyperlink conversion will work in the Gmail or Inbox app for iOS and Android, in addition to the web version. Now, when a user sends a recipient physical addresses, phone numbers, or contacts, the receiving end won't have to copy and paste it into another app. It's not a groundbreaking feature by any measure, surely, but it makes a chore more seamless and intuitive. Again, it remains shocking why this wasn't a thing from the beginning.

When Will Gmail's Converted Links Feature Roll Out?

Google says via its blog post that it's rolling out the feature now, but it could take up to three days before all Gmail users can see it activated. It will also be available to all G suite editions.

For now, converted links will work on phone numbers, physical addresses, and email addresses, as mentioned above. Google hasn't mentioned if it intends to expand the functionality in order for it to, say, recognize when an email mentions apps, movie screenings, or even payments. Adding these would probably feel very intrusive, but surely Google can structure it in a way that doesn't feel imposing.

Make sure to check the Gmail app, Inbox, or the web version to see if converted links has been added. If not, then wait patiently.
