PC gamers are aware that Steam Beta continues to upgrade its list of compatible controllers. This time, Nintendo's Switch Pro controller takes its first step.

On the regular platform, the client already boasts support for most input devices intended for various PC games. Gamepads like Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Xbox One controllers are natively supported by the Windows operating system, which makes it easier to adapt to Valve's system. Meanwhile, Sony only offers the Dualshock 4 with the optional wireless adapter. For now, it depends on the user's preference on what gaming accessory they find comfortable to use with PC gameplay.

Valve Confirms Official Support

It seems that the desire to include Nintendo's latest accessory is not limited to the console gaming crowd. Developers from Valve acknowledge the controller's quality and function as some of the reasons why the team opted to work on its compatibility with the platform.

"We think it is a great device with a feature set that pairs nicely with your Steam catalog. The d-pad is ideal for fighting games and platformers and the gyro enhances aim in your action/FPS titles," wrote Valve on its blog.

"If you'd like to test it out you will need to opt into the Steam Client Beta then follow the steps below. We hope you enjoy and as always, we welcome your feedback," the developers added.

How To Properly Set Up The Controller

The Steam Controller team provided the steps on how to correctly get the platform to recognize the accessory. To begin, users must have access to Steam Beta and head to the Controller Settings page. For those who previously configured their Xbox and PlayStation 4 controllers, this is the same page that needs to be accessed in order to enable the Nintendo Switch Configuration support.

Once the box has been checked, users can then browse, create, and share Switch Pro Controller configurations per game. Users must then connect the accessory and register it to their account. It is also recommended to calibrate the device to ensure accuracy with its gyro sensor.

Next, users will be prompted to create a configuration if they wish to do so or enable an existing configuration depending on the type of game. The developers noted that this can be tweaked anytime during gameplay via the Manage Game screen.

Future Support For Other Accessories

It looks like Valve is only focused on the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller for now. There is no word if the Steam Client will eventually feature support for the Joy-Con controllers. It has been rumored that the company will redesign the latter due to ongoing connection issues reported by gamers.
