On Wednesday, June 29, Snapchat rolled out its Snapchat Plus, a subscription service that grants its users access to a collection of exclusive and pre-release features.

The social media platform, which currently has 330 million users, will charge Plus subscribers $4 a month, allowing you to alter the logo on your account. However, it will not remove the stream of ads that can be seen on the platform.

Snapchat Plus Subscription

According to 9to5Mac, the Snapchat Plus service will only be available in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, France, New Zealand, Australia, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates for now. Still, the company has plans to expand the rollout of the service in the future.

Aside from altering the app's icon, users can pin a friend at the top of their chat window and label them as "BFF," and see who rewatched their Snap stories.

If you wish to sign up for the subscription, tap on the Snapchat Plus option on your profile.

Snapchat has reportedly been testing out the paid tier for weeks to offer its members and generate more revenue.

The move is similar to Twitter's own subscription plan that was launched in 2021 called Twitter Blue, which provides extra features like the ability to undo tweets.

The company has not stated what other perks come with the paid subscription, but it encourages users to provide feedback.

Aside from the paid service, Snapchat has also updated its regular service. As reported by TechTimes, the company has given the users the ability to change their usernames, a feature that the users have been asking for since 2011.

On Feb. 23, Snapchat users were given the option to change their username without affecting their Snap score, Snap code, memories, and friends' lists.

Snapchat is not the only social app to launch a paid tier on its respective platforms. According to The Verge, both Twitter and Telegram have rolled out their own paid subscriptions for their long-time users, and Discord has made money through its Nitro subscription.

Parental Controls Soon

Snapchat has also announced its plans to launch parental controls soon, which will be called "Family Center."

Watchful, a market intelligence company, shared several screenshots of what the Family Center feature will look like once it is rolled out.

The screenshots indicate that the parent of teenagers will be able to see who they are friends with, to whom they have sent a message in the last seven days, and they can report abuse on the platform.

Parents can also invite their teens to the in-app Family Center feature to start the monitoring, and the teens have the option to accept or decline the invitations.

The parental control feature was first teased by Evan Spiegel, Snapchat's CEO, back in October 2021. He mentioned that the feature would let parents see how their children use the social media platform.

Spiegel is hopeful that the feature will help teens get more comfortable on the platform as their parents are there to guide them.
