Snapchat users have been begging the platform since 2011 to allow them to change their usernames, and now the app has finally heard them.

Starting Feb. 23, Snapchat users will be able to change their username without affecting their Snap code, Snap score, friends list, or their memories.

Snapchat Users Can Now Change Their Usernames

A spokesperson from Snapchat said that the app is built around ephemerality; they know that their users grow and change, and they have more than 10 years to make the necessary adjustments. The feature is one of the most requested ones from users, according to The Dailymail.

Your Snapchat username is set when you first create your account, and until now, it has been unchangeable to protect the security of the user.

Snapchat explained that when they first launched the app in 2011, they structured their platform around accounts with unique usernames, like email accounts at the time.

The company added that in order to create that framework, they had to develop a new way to identify each user without asking their community to build new profiles from scratch.

Now, the company has implemented a User ID-based system that provides flexibility when it comes to usernames, according to XDA Developers.

How to Change Your Username

In order to change your username, open the Snapchat app and tap the Bitmoji icon located in the top right corner of the Camera to see your profile.

Choose settings by tapping on the gear icon in the top right corner of your user profile. Tap on your username, and below it, you will see the "Change Username" option.

Type in your new username and tap on Next, and log back into the app to finalize it. While users can now change their Snapchat username, some things to remember.

Snapchat users will only be able to change their username once a year and be unable to change it back to the username they've already used.

Snapchat reassured users that changing their username will not affect their friends' lists, Snap scores, Snap codes, or memories.

The update has come as a massive relief for a lot of Snapchat fans who have been stuck with usernames they do not like.

The update comes after Snapchat teamed up with Ticketmaster to create a new tool called Ticketmatcher that will suggest live entertainment and events to users based on their interests and location.

The Ticketmatcher feature includes a Map Layer and an in-app Mini, which is Snapchat's platform for social experiences, according to TechCrunch.

Snapchat explained that they have partnered with Ticketmaster to give users an innovative experience within the app by matching them with events that they may like based on their indicated preferences, and by allowing them to swipe left and right on upcoming events.

The feature will also let users discover events near them, right there where they are already finding their friends on Snap Map.

Snapchat also announced that it plans to introduce mid-roll advertisements during the stories for the biggest creators on the platform, also known as Snap Stars. The Snap Stars need to apply for the Snap Star distinction to get the feature.
