In the wise words of Paris Hilton, "that's hot!"

A severe heat wave is currently affecting some states in the United States and areas in the United Kingdom, where daily high temperatures are setting new records. In many states, electricity costs are also rising, which is definitely not "cool" for many suffering from this cruel summer.

Although it may be tempting to stay cool by forcing as much cold air into your home as you can, running your air conditioner at full blast can cause your power bill to skyrocket and significantly hurt your wallet.

But how do we stay "cool" without becoming "broke"?

Fortunately for you, an easy adjustment to your thermostat will let you survive the physical and financial challenges posed by this summer. Here are the easy and important tips that you need to keep in mind!

Turn The Thermostat To 78F (26C) When You Are Home

The greatest method for keeping cool in the summer while reducing electricity expenses, according to the US Department of Energy, is to keep your home warmer than usual when no one is around. You may raise the temperature as high as you can bear when everyone is there, according to  CNET.

Homes should be kept at 78 degrees Fahrenheit when occupants are at home during the day, according to Energy Star, an initiative of the US Environmental Protection Agency and the US Department of Energy.

Set Your Thermostat To 88F (31C) When You're Away

You can spend less money this summer by keeping your home warmer while you're away. You can save up to 10% on cooling expenditures by raising your thermostat by seven to ten degrees F (two to three degrees C) while you're out, especially if you'll be gone for longer than two hours, according to Direct Energy.

Therefore, set your thermostat to 88F (31C) while you're away from home to save money and energy. Since the greater interior temperature actually slows the heat flow into your home, it won't require as much energy to cool everything down in your house.

Turn Your Thermostat To 81F (27C) For a Few Hours

Direct Energy recommends adjusting your thermostat to 81 degrees Fahrenheit for a few hours to see how you and your household members will respond. Reduce the temperature by 2F each day for the next few days until you attain 71F.

Afterward, you can adjust the thermostat to a generally comfortable setting for your household. It must be noted that the ideal temperature range for people wearing summer clothing is 73F to 79F, according to the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).

Set The Thermostat To 80F When You Sleep

When you sleep, the temperature of your inner body decreases, and heat emanates from your extremities. The optimum sleep occurs as the body experiences "thermoneutrality" when ambient temperatures are at 86F (naked) or 60 to 66F (wearing pajamas), according to the National Institute of Health

This shows that utilizing lighter bedding and sleepwear while raising your thermostat to a warmer level, like 80F, will help you get a decent night's sleep throughout the summer. You can also use a ceiling fan (if you have one) to ensure that there is a cool breeze streaming onto your bed.
