Tata Motors, a popular car manufacturing company in India, has recently unveiled its cheapest EV for only $10,000. The all-electric version of the Tiago model is now available for reservations.

Indian EV Market is Not Foreign-Friendly

The lone Indian EV automaker is launching the cheapest electric car in the country.

While international car brands such as Tesla, Volvo, Rivian, and more are freely entering EV markets across different countries, the case won't apply to India.

For some reason, India restricts EV makers from entering the market as part of its policy. This is the reason why you won't see any auto brand in the country, except for the local companies.

Tata Motors is currently the only EV manufacturer in India. Even Tesla has a difficult time entering the Indian market because of the protectionist law.

To date, international auto manufacturers are driven to move to different regions because of the government's high tariffs on imports.

The only way left for India to promote the EV business is to support its local brands. Tata Motors seems to need some grinding before it catches up with other foreign automakers.

Tata Motors Launches the Cheapest EV

According to Electrek, the Mumbai-based company has already delivered 45,000 EVs to the streets of India. To spice things up for its customers, Tata Motors is offering a very cheap EV which could rejuvenate EV adoption in the country.

Surprisingly, Indian buyers could take a look at the Tiago model, which boasts a new look in its all-electric version. The budget-friendly car starts at 8.49 Lakh or about $10,000.

Per Reuters, it's even more affordable compared to the Tata Tigor EV sedan, which is reportedly sitting at a starting price of nearly $15,000.

If you still want to look for more low-priced electric cars, China could be your best option. In this region, you can score an EV for as low as 32,800 yuan or $4,525.

Tata Tiago EV Features

Since it's very cheap, you can't expect a set of premium features on the most popular Tesla cars. Tata Motors said that the Tiago model boasts a 19 Kwh battery pack that can operate for up to 155 (250km) miles of range.

If you want a bigger battery pack, you can opt for a 24 Kwh version which sports 194 miles (315km) of range. It's similar to the battery pack of the Nissan Leaf, but the only difference is that it only gets 73 miles of range which is still small for a bigger EV model.

Tata Motors adds that in just 30 mins of charging, the owner can instantly add 110km of range.

The company has confirmed that deliveries of the Tiago EV will kick off next year.
