Recently, the 100 megawatts Dalian Flow Battery Energy Storage Peak-shaving Power Station was connected to the Dalian China grid, as reported by Interesting Engineering. This serves as the largest and most powerful energy storage station in the world to date. It is also the first national, large-scale, chemical energy storage demonstration project approved so far.

The storage will be put into service in mid-October and will produce 200 megawatts/800 megawatt-hour MWh of electricity. 

The first phase of on-grid delivery will be focused on 100 MW/400MWh that will deliver electricity in a continuous flow to 200,000 residents. Therefore, it will reduce pressure on the power supply during peak periods and improve the reliability of the grid in the southern areas of Dalian. 

Achieving Carbon Neutrality Goals

The Dalian Flow Battery Energy Storage power station, it will help China reach its carbon neutrality goals. It will play an important role in "peak cutting and valley filling" across the main power system and will help Dalian use renewable energy.

The Technology

The Dalian Flow Battery Energy Storage Peak-shaving Power Station is based on a vanadium flow battery. It uses vanadium ions of different valence states. The chemical and electrical energies are converted back and forth through a redox reaction of the ions in positive and negative electrolytes. Thus, this makes large-scale storage and release of electrical energy possible. 

It is a safe process with promising reliability, long life, large power output and storage capacity, good cost performance, and the use of recyclable electrolytes makes it even more environmentally friendly. 

The technology can also be used to work with conventional thermal power, nuclear power, and other power sources should there be intermittent power. Thus, it can provide seamless power grids with a high degree of reliability.

Flow batteries are a type of rechargeable battery that is characterized by being composed of either two chemical solutions or two different fluids, which must be pumped into a receiver or storage device to store energy. They are also characterized by having both charges and discharge on the same terminal.

The Dalian Flow Battery Energy Storage Peak-shaving Power Station's successful connection to the Dalian grid has been a first of its kind in China. As it continues to perform well, it will play an increasingly important role in future grid control. The technology will also be used to make China reach its carbon neutrality goal in the future.
