There might be times where you cannot send an iMessage on your iPhone and it just keeps on coming back as SMS texts. This annoying bug for users has a simple solution.

Reverting to encrypted SMS is commonly a cause of poor internet connection. In case you're experiencing this issue, you can immediately check if your signal is strong enough for the Messages app.

Regardless, whether it's an internet connection problem or not, here's how to prevent iMessage from falling back to SMS.

This guide will teach you how to prevent iMessage from reverting to SMS in just a few steps.

According to Apple Insider, iMessage switches automatically to SMS when it fails to deliver over the internet. In some cases, it's because it's not available on the device of the sender or recipient.

Apple says that SMS relies on the older protocol on the device's cellular signal instead of the internet signal.

If you want to prevent this instance from happening again, here's what you need to know. This guide is very easy and you only need to visit the Settings of your iPhone.

  1. First, head to the Settings of your smartphone.
  2. Scroll down and look for "Messages," then click it.
  3. Then, browse down again and search for "send as SMS."
  4. Lastly, turn off this option so your iMessage will not be automatically sent as SMS texts.

It should be noted that this is only available for iPhone users. After toggling it off, you can still have the option to switch back later if you want.

To revert to SMS, all you need to do is to long press the failed message on the display.

If you attempt to send an iMessage to your friend who is an Android user, the message will be delivered as SMS, since the iMessages are exclusive to iPhone owners.

The toggling effect on the option won't work, given that the two platforms are different from one another. The only thing that will happen is that the iMessage will stop reverting to SMS upon a failed message sent.

End-to-End Encryption on Messages

Since Apple wants to value the privacy and security of its users, it still implements end-to-end encryption for the Messages app. This way, the only person who can access his/her message box is the owner only.

The same feature works the same with WhatsApp. Although less privacy is seen on the default iMessage, you can still improve its security by locking it up.

With the increased privacy protection of Apple apps, users can have more freedom to open them without thinking about the security threats that could take place.

If you want to disable the iMessage, Macrumors has a separate guide to get you started.
