Square Enix is potentially giving a hint that the classic role-playing video game from PS1 will come back soon. As Gematsu spotted last week, the Japanese entertainment giant has submitted a trademark filing for "Symbiogenesis."

The said filing was traced to begin last Oct. 13. It just got out in public recently, as per the latest report.

What is Symbiogenesis?

The Square Enix logo is pictured at the company's booth during the Tokyo Game Show in Chiba prefecture on September 15, 2022.

Symbiogenesis seems to be a word taken out from a biology book. In fact, it's related to the subject. As Wiktionary states, it's the process where two separate organisms merge to create a new entity or organism.

For those who are already familiar with the "Parasite Eve" series, the leaked video game is connected to this original story.

"Parasite Eve" is a classic biological horror video game which is based on Hideaki Sena's 1995 Japanese novel. Square Enix adopted the whole series and transformed it into a game. It was launched in 1998.

Square Enix Files Symbiogenesis Trademark

While some sources think that Square Enix will be launching a "Symbiogenesis" title because of the trademark filing leak, we haven't yet heard much from the company.

The comeback of the "Parasite Eve" series could be the nostalgic cue that fans are waiting for this year. Whether it's a remake or a new series, this could be a huge surprise that Square Enix could pull off soon.

This is not the first time that "Parasite Eve" became the main subject of the leaked filing. Bloody Disgusting reports that in 2018, the company also reportedly pursued reviving the series.

A Glimpse of 'Parasite Eve'

To give you a snippet of the series, the story revolves around strangely-looking creatures who just underwent a mutation. Aya Brea works as a police officer in New York. Meanwhile, there's another person who survived the disaster aside from Brea. Her name is Melissa Pearce.

When every person in the community starts to combust, only a few survivors are left in the wake of the unexplainable phenomenon. Melissa later mutated into a new form as she escaped into the sewers.

Melissa is now the creator who calls herself "Eve." The story claims that she has the power to control every living person through their mitochondria.

Aya's mission is to prevent Eve from doing her evil deeds not only in New York but also in other parts of the world. She's the only savior who can stop the monster at all costs.

Sony released "The 3rd Birthday" in 2011. It was the last installment in the "Parasite Eve" series. If the filing is true about Square Enix, then we could definitely see a remastered or a remake version of the game under this franchise.
