Many people, especially Australians, are not surprised to find exotic animals roaming around Australia.

This is because the country's government protects the animals there.

You can see kangaroos jumping and deer running across the road. But, some animal species in Australia still surprise even scientists.

Ph.D. candidate, Nik Willmott, said that the unusual arachnid could be a speckled or green orb-weaver. It depends on what experts see it to be.

"I don't see the fainter longitudinal stripe as much, and having both stripes on the same spider is even rarer," added Willmott.

If you check the image of the rare spider, you will see that its body is green. It has two lines (lighter green) intersecting, which creates the Xbox logo-like appearance.

The rare orb-weaver spider was discovered while the Australian government warned about the increasing spider populations in locations affected by heavy rain and extreme floods.

This means that rare spiders are still expected to appear in the country.

Fun Facts About Orb-Weavers

When it comes to appearances, orb-weavers can be easily identified because they have green and black colors on their bodies.

Aside from their colors, their webs are also unique compared to those produced by their spiders.

This is because their webbings are usually wheel-shaped that have jagged shapes in the central part.

A-Z Animals provided other fun facts you need to know about orb-weavers, such as the following:

  • Orb-weavers rarely bite since they are non-aggressive and docile.
  • Some female orb-weaver spiders cannibalize males.
  • Female orb-weaver spiders are larger than males.
  • There are over 3,000 orb-weaver species across the globe.

Aside from the rare orb-weaver with Xbox logo-like markings, a cunning spider that uses a web slingshot to take down prey was also discovered.

In 2019, experts also discovered that parasitoid wasps could turn spiders into zombies
