CHICAGO, IL - FEBRUARY 06: Fred Diaz, Senior Vice President of Nissan sales and marketing, introduces the Cummins Diesel powered Frontier truck at the Chicago Auto Show on February 6, 2014 in Chicago, Illinois.

It took ten years for the automaker to release its second Electric Vehicle (EV), following the Leaf back in 2011.

The company's Nissan Ariya, an electric crossover, was delayed several times, but it seems the company's now on the right track and is poised to release more EVs soon.

In February 2022, the Japanese automaker announced its plans to invest $500 million in its Canton Vehicle Assembly plant in Mississippi to transform it into a center for US production. Along with the plan is two all-new, all-electric vehicles.

However, the company didn't specify what EVs will be built. However, the Canton facility mainly manufactures pickup trucks, which is why there were rumors that Nissan would start producing an electric truck.

Nissan Electric Truck

According to Automotive News, the company finds it's only logical to bring an electric version of the Nissan Frontier, specifically its hardbody that has been a part of the brand for years.

Dealers are also requesting a mid-size pickup, like the frontier. It seems that the company is sold on the idea, especially that making electric trucks will reduce operating costs.

Nissan said production of the two electric vehicles at the Canton plant is planned to start in 2025.

The Growth of Electric Pickups Today

It seems that there are more car manufacturers that are considering making electric pickup trucks. General Motors (GM) is considering producing a small electric pickup that will be a part of its affordable EV lineup. The compact electric pickup truck is expected to be smaller than the Nissan Frontier.

Electric pickup trucks are becoming the hottest and most desirable EVs on the market today due to the impressive releases of Rivian, Ford, and GMC. Now, more automakers are following suit.

Electric pickups provide a new way to haul around gear and explore the outdoors. What makes them even better is that they offer massive torque with a near-instantaneous response.

Besides Nissan, there are more electric pickup trucks coming this year. One of Alpha Motor Corporation's Wolf has started taking reservations, while Canoo's unique EV pickup is also worth waiting for.

There is also the 2024 Silverado EV that rides on the same dedicated EV architecture as the GMC Hummer. Ford might also release a new pickup truck, which is the electric version of its Ranger.

Nissan's electric pickup, should it go ahead with its plans, will likely be mid-size, such as the Rivian R1T. By releasing a more compact and affordable electric truck, Nissan will have a better portfolio that will enable them to gain traction again in the EV market.
